Federal Aviation Administration safety regulators are preparing to issue warnings to pilots and airlines about potential interference with key cockpit safety systems by a new 5G wireless service.
Officials have been drafting a special bulletin and accompanying mandates that say certain automated features used by pilots to fly and land aircraft could be affected by the wireless towers on the ground transmitting the new 5G signals.
AT&T and Verizon are gearing up to deploy the first tranches of the C-band spectrum for 5G in December. But airline groups and those in the aerospace industry say the carriers need to put short-term solutions in place to avoid harmful interference or expect major disruptions to air travel, transport, and emergency helicopter operations.
Canada has already announced new restrictions on 5G services near most major airports, banning 5G base stations over a large area around runways.
